Fighter Jet Pilots
Skua’s have bigger and better working flight muscles than most other birds, and their primary feathers are longer. This helps them to accelerate very quickly, making them masters of aerial pursuit.
Pirates of the Sky!
Skua’s are klepto-parasites, which means they chase other sea birds while in flight until they give up their food. This sounds like a pirate to me!
Opportunists
Skua’s are opportunistic feeders because they cannot dive well. They take their chance to pick up food from the sea surface, including dead animals, or scavenge from fishing vessels where they find fish scraps and discards. Easy-peasy!
Built-in Salt Remover
At sea, fresh water is very hard to come by. Skua’s have special glands in sockets above their eyes that helps to remove salt so that they can drink the seawater.
