Whistles
This is how dolphins talk with each other. For example, they can say, ‘hi!’, ‘I’m 5 years old’ and ‘I’m on the very edge of the school looking for sardines!’
To do this, they each have their own signature whistle. Because dolphins are not born with a whistle, their need to develop their own whistle when they are calves. All the dolphins in the school know each other’s whistle, and this keeps everyone safe within the school.
Echolocation
This is seeing with sound by using clicks and sound pulses.
Clicks are pulsed sounds that are ultrasonic, meaning humans cannot hear it. Dolphins use it to check out what is around them, and to find food. They can work out how big something is, and how far away. By using this cool tool, dolphins can see an object the size of an orange from over 80 meters away!
